Misuses and Adulteration of Biochar

Dr N Sai Bhaskar Reddy

Biochar is a valuable material with numerous beneficial applications. However, there are growing concerns about its misuse and adulteration, which can pose significant health and environmental risks. (This is from authors interaction with people and a few observations). Here are some key points to be aware of:

1. Adulteration in Incense Sticks:

- Traditionally, charcoal or biochar powder has been used in the production of incense sticks. Recently, some manufacturers have begun using charcoal powder derived from recycled tyres. This material, when burned, releases carcinogenic smoke or causes ill health. For easy burning they were using oils. Such practices are hazardous to health and should be avoided.

2. Use of Tyre Charcoal in Other Products:

- Beyond incense sticks, there have been instances where recycled tyre charcoal is mixed with other products, like Fuller's earth, to achieve a dark color. This practice not only degrades the quality of the product but also introduces harmful substances.

3. Health Risks:

- The use of recycled tyre charcoal poses significant health risks. The smoke emitted from burning this material contains carcinogens that can lead to serious respiratory and other health issues.

4. Environmental Concerns

- Burning tyres to produce charcoal releases harmful pollutants into the environment, contributing to air pollution and posing risks to wildlife and ecosystems.

5. Consumer Awareness:

- It is crucial for consumers to be aware that not all black materials are genuine charcoal or biochar. Adulterated products may look similar but can have vastly different properties and harmful effects.

6. Quality Assurance:

- Ensuring the quality and purity of biochar is essential. Consumers and manufacturers should demand proper certification and testing of biochar products to avoid the risks associated with adulteration.

Misuses and adulteration of biochar, such as the use of recycled tyre charcoal in products like incense sticks and Fuller's earth, pose serious health and environmental risks. It is important to raise awareness and ensure that only genuine, high-quality biochar is used in various applications. Always verify the source and quality of biochar to protect your health and the environment.
